Google I/O 2022 – What's new in the world of Android

This year’s Google IO has finished and there is a lot of news that can be written about. We have chosen the ones that seem most interesting to us.The conference is usually more software-oriented, but this year also brought many hardware innovations such as Pixel 6a (affordable ), Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds Pro and Pixel Tablet.

Android Studio

Dolphin

‘D’ is for Dolphin which is moved to Beta channel. In this release these features and improvements can be found.

  • define annotation classes to apply multiple Compose preview definitions at once
  • track recomposition counts for your composables in the Layout Inspector
  • brand new Logcat v2

Electric Eel

Next alphabet character is ‘E’ - Electric Eel is here. You can take a sneak peek at this release in Canary channel, you will find this features

  • see Firebase Crashlytics reports directly in Android Studio using the new App Quality Insights window
  • test your app’s UI on representative reference devices using a single resizable Android Emulator
  • experimental Live Edit features

Android 13 Beta

A new beta of Android 13 was released on the day of the conference. Latest release brings a couple of interesting features like a new predictive back gesture, permission to use exact alarms, and better support for Bluetooth LE Audio.

Main focus in new beta is on themes like privacy and security. For this fields a features like new permission for sending notifications, a privacy-protecting photo picker, and improved permissions when pairing with nearby devices and accessing media files was added.

Now in Android as App

Up to now, Now in Android has been blog and Youtube channel for learners but also for advanced Android developers which provided latest news from Android team. Now in Android is on Github now as alpha version of showcase app. For this first release, it includes e.g. UI built using Jetpack Compose, Material3 theming, adaptive layouts, architecture which follows official guidance and local-remote sync using WorkManager. You can check it out on Github.
